VIC: Woman confronted by rubber mallet wielding bandit

A 19-year-old woman has been confronted by a man who used a rubber mallet to smash
his way into her home at Ferntree Gully in Melbourne's east early today.

Police say the intruder first used the mallet to smash through a front window at a
Forest Road sandwich bar, which adjoins the residence, at about 3.15am.

He stole cash and other items before using the mallet to smash open a door and enter
the residential part of the premises.

Police say he turned on a light and began searching the loungeroom when the victm entered
the room.

The man threatened her before fleeing.

The woman called police who searched the area and are questioning a 17-year-old man
over the incident.
