London, June 24 -- Hackers struck computer systems of the Sun newspaper and The Times, bombarding them with Internet traffic in an attempt to make them crash.
The international hacking group LulzSec, has taken exception to the Sun's coverage of the arrest of Ryan Cleary who is a member of the group, the police said.
LulzSec has also threatened a major attack on government websites. It came as Cleary, 19, was remanded in custody for further questioning by police as he appeared in court charged with five hacking offences, the Telegraph reports.
News International declined to comment on the attacks on its servers, but revealed that computers in Russia had been used to attack the Sun website and Times newspaper.
The production of The Times was not affected and the website of the Sun was slowed down but did not crash at any time.
Cleary is said to be co-operating with the police as they investigate a string of cyber attacks both here and abroad. He appeared before City of Westminster magistrates charged with five offences under the Criminal Law and Computer Misuse Act, including an attack on the website of the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
Cleary was arrested from his home in Wickford, Essex on Monday in a joint operation by Scotland Yard and the FBI.
