NT: Aboriginal community to be relocated by railway

The Northern Territory government will spend $1 million shifting a central AustralianAboriginal community out of the path of the Alice Springs to Darwin railway.

The government has picked up the bill to relocate the Harry Creek East outstation, about 50 kilometres north of Alice Springs.

Chief Minister CLARE MARTIN says the shift will take place with the community's blessing.

The move was agreed in negotiations between traditional owners, the Asia Pacific TransportConsortium and the government over where the new corridor will run.

The 1,420-kilometre railway is scheduled to be completed by March 2004.
